The fact is that the best and most successful restaurants never advertise, because they don't need to. When your place is full, why bother to attract more customers, why spend money that you don't need to?
As a former President of the Master Chefs of Great Britain and Vice Chairman of the Restaurant Association, I have accumulated an enormous amount of knowledge on which restaurants you can trust to give you honest, value for money, meals and which ones try to rip you off.
I have now been in the restaurant business for well over thirty years, and started Porters English Restaurant in London's Covent Garden in 1979, with a clear aim, 'to provide reasonably priced real English food at honest prices'. Still very true today, so do check out our Porters site by clicking on the icon on the right, to see my long held belief that restaurants should display their prices straightforwardly.
I also know which places present their pricing policy clearly, and which ones try to disguise what a meal will really cost, giving you an awful shock when the bill arrives - but those will be obvious by their absence!
Some of the places in my fairly priced London guide might not be considered cheap, though some are extremely reasonable, but if you are looking to enjoy a really special evening and want to splash out a bit, then these will hopefully fit the bill - in more ways than one.
You will spot that many of the restaurants are not in the centre of London - and quite a few are South of the River Thames - but, whilst the travelling can be inconvenient, you should find that it pays off in terms of value for money.
